VENICE, Fla. -

A 73-year old veteran says he was fired from a Cracker Barrel restaurant for giving a needy man something to eat.

Joe Koblenzer was working at the Florida restaurant when a man asked him for some food. Joe gave him a few condiment packets and a corn muffin.

A manager found out food was given out for free and Joe was let go.

Joe says he's sad over the situation and misses work, but understands he broke the rules.

"The general manager called me in and said he had some bad news for me. 'Joe, we are going to have to let you go.' It's a rule. They legally can do this because I did break the rule," said Joe.

Cracker Barrel released a statement saying this was the fifth time Joe had been cited for consuming or giving away food without payment for it.
