Court: Inmate can't be punished for doing as told

Updated:
PUTNAMVILLE, Ind. - A federal court says the Indiana Department of Correction was wrong to put an inmate in solitary confinement for using a computer at the request of prison officials.

Putnamville Correctional Facility inmate Eric Grandberry's work in the prison library required him to use prison computers to download legal materials for other prisoners.

However, a federal appeals court found that after prison employees asked him to download a petition to stop child support and divorce forms for them and it was discovered during a police analysis, he was put in solitary confinement for unauthorized use of the computer.

The court ruled that since prison employees asked Grandberry to do it, downloading the documents was authorized.

A spokesman for the state attorney general didn't immediately respond to a message seeking comment Thursday.
