Houston plans smooth IndyCar race after bumpy 2013

HOUSTON -

Organizers of the Grand Prix of Houston are planning on a smoother race this season after bumps on the road course caused a series of problems last year.

Helio Castroneves drove over a bump in the first turn of the second race last year and essentially bottomed out. The force broke his gearbox and sent him to the garage. After arriving with a 49-point lead, he left Houston with an 8-point lead.

Martyn Thake is overseeing the construction of the course this year. He says they have demolished the part of the track where the first turn was and poured new concrete.

The races are June 28 and 29.
