INDIANAPOLIS -

A veteran homicide detective has created a new foundation to curb the surge of violent crime that began several years ago in Indianapolis.

HIM By HER (Helping Improve Mankind By Healing Every Race) was created by IMPD Det. Harry C. Dunn, III, a third generation homicide detective.

"I have worked meticulously for the past three years to develop a program that addresses the needs of the community and that of the stake holders-our youth." said Harry C. Dunn, III Homicide Detective "We have been blessed to receive support from charitable organizations, the juvenile system and the private sector."

The program is set to open next year. HIM by HER will guide young adults to a better career path and character development. Det. Dunn has reconstructed the Enterprise City Experience to accommodate after-school programs for youth and young adults capitalizing on the development of trade skills.

Marion County Juvenile Detention Center with cooperation from the Juvenile Courts, have agreed that young juvenile offenders would participate as a condition of their probation. Juveniles will receive program training for four days and then actually engage in the Enterprise City Experience on the fifth day. In the Enterprise City Experience, juveniles and young adults learn valuable lessons ranging from intensive interviewing role-playing, civics, financial literacy and entrepreneurship. Initial training areas include HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical, Lawn Care, Barbering & Cosmetology, Carpentry, Bricklaying and Roofing.

Detective Dunn believes it is vital to follow up with the kids once they leave the program. He has asked IMPD Chief Rick Hite to make officers available for ongoing, in-person progress follow-ups. Marion County Sheriff John Layton will also provide community policing follow-up by the Sheriff's Department, as well as acting as in-house mentors.

You can find out more about HIM by HER on the program's website.
