Groundbreaking on new Greenwood aquatics facility today in Freedom Park

GREENWOOD, Ind. -

They're making waves in Greenwood this morning.

Following up a project that put a splash pad in for neighborhood kids to cool-off in.  They're putting another plan focused on family entertainment and wellness into action. This is a day years in the making for Greenwood after several failed attempts to get a new aquatics center here. But, two years ago after the parks board condemned the last public pool leaving the city high and dry, a public outcry sparked a stronger effort than ever to get this project afloat. Today, the city will break ground here at Freedom Park on their new aquatics facility.

Here's a look! It's a ten million dollar facility that will include a leisure river, lazy river type feature where you can float along on inner tubes. There will be a lap pool complete with a diving area and a play area for kids where they can crawl around on fun things while getting wet. Mayor Mark Meyers said the benefit of this center goes beyond creating a summer centerpiece for those who already live here.

"As we look at bringing in larger business more business into the city-- the people look for quality of life and one thing we don't have to offer is an aquatics center. People who want to relocate their businesses want something for their employees and their families and that's one of the things we're lacking. So, we're really excited about that," said Greenwood Mayor Mark Myers.

This center will be joining the city's splash park, which opened last year providing a cool relief for residents during the hot summer months.

There was some talk about this project running over the ten million dollar budget. Mayor Myers says that's no longer a problem. Groundbreaking takes place this afternoon and the center is set to open next Memorial Day 2015.
