INDIANAPOLIS -

Jeffrey Porter and his mother Bettye got the news soon after the crash happened.

“I couldn't believe it when I heard it. I just couldn't believe it," said Bettye Porter, wife of 79-year-old George Porter. George was killed at 16th and Riverside Sunday morning when the driver of a stolen car ran a red light and slammed into Porter's Honda.

“I don't know how I’m going to explain it to some of the grandkids now. I don't know how long I'm going to wait before I let them know he's really dead.” said Bettye Porter.

Porter was an innocent victim at the wrong place, at the wrong time. According to his family, it's clear who is responsible.

“The three guys who stole the car - that's where it all started. Then the police have to do their job,” said son Jeffrey Porter.

Those suspects allegedly carjacked a man at gunpoint on the northwest side around 9:20 Sunday morning. An hour later, an Eskenazi Hospital security officer, who is actually a Marion County Sheriff's deputy, spotted the stolen vehicle and tried to pull it over. The chase lasted less than two miles before the crash happened.

“I'm not upset at the police,” said Bettye Porter. “I'm upset at the guys that was in that car that had those guns. That's who I'm upset with.”

George Porter was on his way to St. Peter and Paul's Cathedral downtown. He was doing what he did every Sunday - trying to make it to 10:30 mass.

“He was a good man. A good person. Kind.” said Bettye Porter.

Now after 60 years of marriage, Bettye is a widow.

“I got my ring on I got his on too,” Bettye said pointing to the wedding rings on her hand.

19 year-old Troy Scott, the driver of the stolen car, currently faces robbery charges. The names of the two other suspects have not been released.
