Teacher retirements to help pay for school buses

MUNCIE, Ind. -

A wave of teacher retirements will help a cash-strapped central Indiana school district keep its buses on the road.

Muncie Community Schools Chief Financial Officer Mark Burkhart says staff retirements are expected to help provide the $2.6 million needed for bus service in the third year of a three-year contract approved recently.

The Star Press reports  the departures stem in part from changes in state law that have made retirement more attractive. More than 40 teachers have opted to retire this year.

The district faces a significant loss in its transportation fund because of tax caps and legislation dictating how property tax revenue is allocated. Voters rejected a tax increase to fund buses last year, and the state denied a request to end bus service starting next year.
