I&M agrees to build camouflaged Muncie substation

MUNCIE, Ind. -

Indiana Michigan Power has agreed to build a scaled-down electric substation in Muncie that will be camouflaged by decorative fencing and the fake facades of three homes.

The utility had faced opposition from the city, Ball State University, a hospital and a neighborhood association to its plans for an open-air substation longer than a football field near one of Ball State's major gateways.

But The Press reports that after lengthy negotiations, I&M and Mayor Dennis Tyler unveiled plans Friday for a much smaller and enclosed substation.

Tyler says the decorative fencing and facades will leave the substation "pretty much unrecognizable." The new substation will replace a small, outdated substation several blocks away.

The proposed substation still must be approved by the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission.
