Ryan Hunter-Reay will have to drive from the back in his first race since winning the Indianapolis 500.
Hunter-Reay brushed the wall during Saturday morning qualifying for the first race of the Detroit Grand Prix doubleheader. It happened on his second lap and the American was forced to drive his damaged Andretti Autosport entry to pit lane and end his qualifying attempt.
Hunter-Reay says he was simply trying to make a fast lap and the rear of the car snapped around, causing him to brush the wall. He believes there's plenty of time to fix the rear suspension before Saturday afternoon's race.
IndyCar will race Saturday and Sunday on Belle Isle.
Hunter-Reay took over the series points lead with his Indy 500 victory.
