FTC urging crackdown on 'data brokers'

Updated:
WASHINGTON - Federal officials say you probably don't realize just how much information about you is being collected and sold every day -- details about what you buy, where you buy it and where you live.

Turns out companies are now using your offline purchases and activities as a way to find and target you online. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is concerned the details could mean not everyone has the same access to products and prices.

Our 13 Investigates team reports that the FTC Tuesday urged Congress to tighten rules for data brokers and let you have more control over how your information is used. They want a central website where companies show you what information they have and let you opt out.
