The government is going to bat for passengers confused by the increasing array of fees charged by airlines.
The Transportation Department is proposing new rules to require the disclosure of fees for basic items like checked bags, assigned seats and carry-on bags wherever airline tickets are sold so that consumers know the true cost of flying. That includes tickets sold on websites, on the phone and in person. Online airfare search tools would also have to disclose fees.
Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx says the information will empower consumers to make better travel choices.
The public has 90 days to comment on the proposal. Foxx says he hopes the rule will become final within the next year.
