Detroit Grand Prix extends deal with Chevrolet

DETROIT -

The Detroit Grand Prix has reached a two-year extension with Chevrolet to keep a race on Belle Isle through at least 2016.

The announcement was made Tuesday.

Auto racing returned to Detroit in 2012 following a four-year absence thanks in part to a three-year deal with Chevy. Without the new contract, this year's IndyCar races could have potentially been the last ones scheduled in the Motor City.

The Detroit Grand Prix will feature a pair of races - on May 30 and June 1 - just like last year. Simon Pagenaud and Mike Conway won the races on an improved track that held up much better than it did in 2012 when pot holes and grooves spoiled the show.
