Power restored to South Bend downtown after outage

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -

Utility crews have restored power to downtown South Bend after an underground electrical fire led to an outage lasting three days.

Indiana Michigan Power Co. spokesman Brian Bergsma says power was restored shortly after noon Sunday. He says crews were monitoring the restored power lines to make sure there were no lingering issues, but none were immediately spotted.

Utility crews replaced 4,000 feet of copper cable.

The fire Thursday cut power to more than 800 downtown South Bend homes and businesses while thousands of people came to town for the University of Notre Dame's weekend commencement ceremonies. The Notre Dame campus wasn't affected by the outage.

WSJV-TV reports the DoubleTree Hotel brought in generators so two weddings could be held there Saturday.
