A Terre Haute native is the new 500 Festival Queen.

Channel 13 Sports Director Dave Calabro announced at a ceremony Saturday morning that Lauren Isaacs won the crown.

Race car driver Arie Luyendyk, Junior served as the surprise guest who crowned her as queen.

Isaacs is a communications major at Purdue University. She will be a senior in the fall.

A total of 33 women competed for the crown in the 55th annual competition.

The moment her name was announced, her tears and shock become instantly visible.

"I was like 'oh there's another girl from Terre Haute here? Who is that?' But then I was like, wait that's really me! I cannot even express my thanks to everyone," she said moments after winning.

She describes why the award came as such a shock.

"I actually applied for this program two years ago and I ended up not getting it, and you know, it was rough and it took a while to get over, but everything happens for a reason and as cliché as that is, it does happen though," Isaacs said.

She also wins a $2,500 scholarship from the 500 Festival Princess Program and WTHR-TV.

"I have to applaud the other 32 girls, these are some of the most outstanding girls I've probably been with," Isaacs said.

She is a 2011 graduate of Terre Haute North Vigo High School and is the daughter of John and Lisa Isaacs.

Patia Storms, of Brownsburg, a sophomore at Purdue University; and Brittany Wagner, of Monticello, a senior at Purdue University were chosen as 2014 Princess Court members.

The women were selected from 230 applicants, based on criteria including communication skills, poise, academic performance, and community involvement.

Applicants are between the ages of 18 and 23, are not married, and are residents of Indiana. Candidates must also be enrolled in a Indiana university or college.

The Queen and her Court attend various events throughout the year.
