Calabro blog: Drivers ready for intense qualifying weekend

Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS - The weather dominated the news coming from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this week.

The drivers are in for a long and stressful weekend of qualifying for the Indy 500. Helio Castroneves told me he doesn’t sleep much before qualifying because it's so intense!

Drivers will have to run four solid laps on Saturday to just make the field of 33 in the race. The Top 9 get to race for the number one starting spot on Sunday.

This is a new format from a year ago. It will be interesting to see what it does to the crowd.

Will people skip Saturday to see Pole Day Sunday?

Ed Carpenter went 230 miles an hour during Friday’s brief practice session. He won the pole position last year.

Keep an eye out for Ganassi Racing. I think Tony Kanaan and Scott Dixon will have a big weekend.

Team Penske is always ready to roll. Helio Castroneves is one of the best at hanging it out there for four laps!

Weather update: Showers and thunderstorms are a possibility this afternoon. Follow WTHR on Twitter for weather updates.

We will see you at the track! Bring an umbrella and sunscreen! Watch Eyewitness News after the Preakness (starting at 4:30 pm; followed by Eyewitness News at approximately 6:30 pm) for a wrap-up.
