Texas company nears Indiana ethanol plant restart

MOUNT VERNON, Ind. -

An energy company expects to resume production this summer at an ethanol plant along the Ohio River that was shut down two years ago by its previous owner.

The Indiana Economic Development Corp. announced Tuesday it was offering San Antonio-based Valero Renewable Fuels up to $600,000 in tax credits based on its plans to hire about 60 workers for the Mount Vernon plant.

Company spokesman Bill Day tells the Evansville Courier & Press that workers are doing a top-to-bottom check of the plant's equipment to ensure its safety.

Valero bought plant about 20 miles west of Evansville in March from Pekin, Illinois-based Aventine Renewable Energy. Aventine idled the plant in March 2012 amid a decline in the ethanol market.
