Marriage vote fallout limited to few Indiana races

Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

The bitter fight over whether to amend Indiana's constitution to ban gay marriage is providing a small spark to an otherwise quiet primary.

Three state lawmakers face challenges Tuesday from candidates who've made their votes on the amendment a campaign issue. But most of the 100 House members and 25 Senate members on the ballot are finding gay marriage isn't an issue.

It's a sharp change from earlier this year. Concerns about ballot-box consequences prompted a Republican donor to urge Republican House Speaker Brian Bosma to drop the issue. Former Republican Party Chairman Jim Kittle says he offered to support Republicans who faced election challenges because of how they voted.

Republicans hold supermajorities in the House and Senate and are expected to remain in a strong position come November.
