Police are investigating a crash that killed a 15-year-old boy from Plainfield.

Dylan Cox, 15, died Saturday night after he was struck by a car while he was riding a skateboard. It happened at around 10:15 pm on Heartland Boulevard near Raceway Road.

According to police, the vehicle was westbound when it struck Cox, who was wearing dark-colored clothing and riding a skateboard in the roadway.

Chasta Davis, a friend of Cox had to see the place where the crash occurred.

"Just to see where it all happened and get some closure. Know that he's really gone," she said.

"I'm not blaming nobody," said Cox's mother, Holly Hutcherson.

But there is something troubling her.

"I wish these lights were on and they were not on," she said, pointing to a string of street lights in the median, one just feet from where her son was hit. "The lights don't work, ever. Being fancy is not what I like."

Neighbors tell Eyewitness News the issue came up at a recent neighborhood crime watch meeting and security officers have reported the non-working lights. But it's not clear who is supposed to fix them.

Police are still investigating, looking at the driver's speed, but say alcohol was not involved and no charges have been filed against the driver.

Cox's aunt, Chris Clark, knows the driver and says he is "an older gentleman. We know it was an accident. We don't blame them. I know they're hurting just as well. They have a 15-year-old grandchild."

She says the teen and his cousin were headed to buy sodas when the crash happened.

"He was very carefree," said Davis. "Was very funny, made the mood, like, better. He would brighten up any room."

Dylan's many friends are devastated.

His family does not have money for a funeral and have set up a fund for that.
