Highest number of vote centers in place this year

Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

Indiana residents in a growing number of counties won't be stuck with one voting site for next week's primary elections.

Vote centers open to anyone registered in a participating county have been on the rise since the pilot programs in 2007.

County participation went up to 16 this year compared to seven in 2012, but others are discouraged by costs and logistics planning.

Clerks overseeing vote centers say using fewer locations that are open to more voters saves money in staffing. They say centers are more convenient for busy residents who might prefer to vote while running errands or on their way to pick up their children.

Some worry that closing neighborhood centers could make voting difficult for seniors or others with transportation issues.
