INDIANAPOLIS - Police have identified the victim of an early morning murder on the Indianapolis northwest side.

Someone shot and killed 19-year-old Cortez Moton Tuesday morning. His body was found in a car in the parking lot of the Abington Apartment complex in the 4600 block of Abington Way.

Police received the 911 call around 1:30 am of 10 to 15 shots fired at the complex. When they got on the scene, they found a man dead in a white car.

According to police, they saw a large number of shell casings on the ground near the passenger's side of the car with bullet holes in the door. Moton was in the driver's seat. Police say that suggests someone was standing outside the car and fired the shots into it.

Police also determined the car Moton was in was stolen from Hamilton County.

"What neighbors said is they saw an unknown vehicle speeding away and we don't know if that person was involved or just frightened by the bullets. But we can say with certainty that obviously the person was involved in felonious activity inside of a stolen vehicle," said Ofc. Chris Wilburn, Indianapolis Metro Police Dept.

Officers spent the overnight hours canvassing this community and returned later Tuesday to talk to more people.

"We do canvassing.  They'll knock on doors and talk to as many people as they can that are awake.  They'll even come back the next day to get preliminary information and it's not uncommon to have someone come forward who maybe didn't want to come and talk to anybody because there was so much activity," said Officer Wilburn.
