IURC approves Citizens Energy rate increase

Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

A rate increase is on the way for Citizens Energy customers.

Citizens Energy Group is still working out the exact amount, but it's estimated to be about $14 a month for customers.

The increase will go towards eliminating sewage overflow. It will also be used to update an aging system including eliminating failing septic tanks.

The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC) approved the rate increase Wednesday, saying that the projects are "vital to the public health."

Currently during periods of heavy rain, sewage can overflow into streams and rivers. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency issued a consent decree in 2006 for the City of Indianapolis, which was the previous owner of the municipal wastewater system in Marion County. The consent decree requires the utility to make improvements to the infrastructure in order to reduce the overflow.
