BOONE COUNTY - Two women died in a crash at 96th St. and Zionsville Rd. Tuesday afternoon when a tire came off their SUV.

A Ford Explorer and Chevrolet Prism were involved in the crash, which occurred just before 1:00 pm. Two women in the Ford Explorer died after police say the right rear tire came off the vehicle. The driver, who was headed eastbound on 96th St. approaching Zionsville Rd., lost control, spun out, crossed the center line and crashed into the Prism, which was in the westbound lane of 96th, before overturning.

Zionsville Police identified the driver as Mika J. Baird, 30, of Indianapolis. Her passenger was identified as Lesley Martinez, 31, also of Indianapolis. Both women were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the lug nuts were not secured properly, and the tire that came off was the spare for the Explorer.

The driver of the Prism was not injured.

Police say all three people involved in the crash were wearing seatbelts.
