MARION COUNTY - An off-duty Marion County sheriff's deputy was killed Sunday night in a motorcycle accident.

Eric Stofer, 35, hit a pothole around 7:40 p.m. while driving near Acton Road and Maze Creek Road near the Marion - Johnson County line, according to State Police who are investigating the incident. He was riding a Silver 2002 Suzuki motorcycle when he crashed and was not wearing a helmet. No other vehicles were involved in the accident.

Rescue crews tried to treat Stofer when they first arrived at the scene, but he was pronounced dead a little before 8:00.

While an autopsy will determine specific cause of death, accident investigators tell us neither speed or alcohol are considered factors. Deputy Stofer was an inmate transportation deputy in the jail division of the Marion County Sheriff's Department and was an eleven-year veteran with the office.

Sheriff John Layton and the men and women of the sheriff's department have extended their thoughts and prayers to Deputy Stofer's family.  While investigators can't say whether a helmet would have saved deputy Stofer's life, Indiana State Police strongly recommend drivers and passengers of motorcycles always wear a helmet when riding a motorcycle.

Stofer leaves behind a fiancee and three children.
