Upgrades to bring State Road 37 between Bloomington and Martinsville up to higher standards for Interstate 69 have been contracted.
The Indiana Finance Authority and Indiana Department of Transportation on Tuesday announced the agreement with private contractor I-69 Development Partners to improve and maintain the stretch of highway.
Private activity bonds to finance the project are set for to be issued in June and construction is scheduled for later this year. The 21 new miles of interstate are slated to open by the end of 2016.
The construction is part of a larger plan to extend I-69 between Evansville and Indianapolis. The state hopes the improvements will encourage economic growth in southern Indiana.
