Bigger ethics questions in House Turner review

Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

The House Ethics Committee that's scheduled to take up the case of state Rep. Eric Turner will have to decide the narrow question of whether he violated any rules along with the broader question of whether House ethics rules are substantial enough.

Republican House Speaker Brian Bosma called for the ethics panel to meet following reports that Turner had lobbied privately to kill a nursing home ban that would have been disastrous for his family's businesses.

The Associated Press reported last week that Turner, his son and other make millions of dollars on each nursing home deal they complete.

Indiana University ethics expert Stuart Yoak says lawmakers will have to decide whether Turner hid his motives and whether he put his self-interest above his public duty.
