Harsh Indiana winter straps county budgets

Updated:
FORT WAYNE, Ind. -

The harshest winter in decades has forced highway departments across Indiana to look for money to pay off snow-related overtime and repair roads.

Allen County Highway Director Bill Hartman tells The Journal Gazette his department had spent more than $1 million in overtime and supplies as of late March. He's asked the City Council for money to help cover those costs. Noble and Vanderburgh counties are among those doing the same.

Vanderburgh County officials say they need to pull $500,000 from reserve funds to pay for road repairs. County Commissioner Marsha Abell tells the Evansville Courier & Press even that won't be enough to fix all the problems.

Many communities say they don't plan to change how they budget next year and hope that this year's winter was an aberration.
