A K9 officer in Lafayette is retiring after more than seven years on the force.

The Lafayette Police Department announced Sunday that K9 "Jarca" would retire after an extremely successful career with her handler Ofc. Ryan French.

Jarca was trained in both drug and suspect apprehension and, together with Ofc. French, seized more than 25,000 grams of marijuana, 185 grams of crack, 72 grams of cocaine, 56 grams of meth, 51 grams of heroin and more than $50,000 in cash. Her work also ended in the arrests of 277 narcotics users and 145 narcotics sellers.

Jarca and Ofc. French will be recognized at the City Council meeting on Monday at 7:00 p.m. The public is invited to attend.

Jarca will join the French family as their pet upon her retirement.
