Excise police seize illegal booze after Facebook post

Updated:

A Tell City man is facing misdemeanor charges after police searched his home and seized liquor-making equipment after the man posted photos of the equipment to Facebook.

State Excise Police officers began investigating Jeremy Thompson in February after receiving a tip about the man's photo containing a distilling apparatus.

"Here's my new gig," Thompson posted, standing next to the equipment.

Officers also found more photos and posts indicating Thompson was manufacturing and distributing untaxed liquor. They seized the equipment, along with containers of liquor Thompson said he produced and was untaxed.

Thompson is facing misdemeanor charges including possession of unlicensed equipment for the production of alcoholic beverages, sale without a permit, unauthorized dealings and the sale of untaxed alcoholic beverages.

"The production of unregulated alcohol is a public safety concern that cannot be ignored," Indiana State Excise Police Superintendent Matt Strittmatter said. "State Excise officers will continue to investigate any information that is received concerning the illegal production of liquor."
