BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -

A Bloomington mother is facing charges after leaving her young children home alone while she went out dancing.

Marti Lee Rodman, 25, was in Indianapolis partying when her three-year-old daughter was found alone on her bike at 1:30 a.m. Not just a house away or a block away, but a quarter-mile away from her home.

"That even surprises us more that she went dancing and left those kids alone," said neighbor Dan Arthur.

Police say that's what Rodman admits happened.

"It's terrible," said Arthur.

Bloomington police took the three-year-old and her bike home and found her five-year-old sister asleep. But they could not find her mother.

"Apparently, the children were hungry and one of the officers took it upon himself to make them a peanut butter and jelly sandwich to tide them over," said Bloomington Police Capt. Joe Qualters.

The girls' mother did get home around 4:30 a.m.

"She left at 10:30 p.m. Saturday, thought the children would sleep through the night, because they were sleeping when she left," Qualters said.

"A mother should be, a father should be more watchful," Arthur said.

"The safety of the children comes first," said Qualters. "We all know there are a number of things that could've happened to those children, none of them good."

Eyewitness News visited the home of the children's grandfather, down the street in the same mobile home park where they live with their mother.

"They're right here. I'm taking care of them, don't worry about it," the grandfather said before slamming the door.

Marti Lee Rodman faces two charges of neglect. She has no criminal priors, police say.
