Garage explosion, fire under investigation on south side

INDIANAPOLIS -

A garage explosion on the south side of Indianapolis threatened nearby homes Tuesday evening.

The fire happened in the 3100 block of Asbury, near Troy Avenue and I-65. Neighbors say they heard an explosion and saw a two-car garage consumed in flames. Firefighters say a 14-year-old boy was in the house when he noticed the garage fire. He called 911 and evacuated the home.

The fire damaged the rear and sides of one house and spread to a neighbor's garage. But other neighbors chipped in and came to the rescue.

"My neighbors were really good. They came out and right away got hoses and they were trying to save my house and my garage. Unfortunately, the smoke was overbearing and we just had to move away. We couldn't even breathe," said homeowner Lourdes Mitrisin.

The fire heavily damaged her garage and items she had stored there. But those hoses kept her house undamaged. Firefighters are investigating, looking for a cause of the explosion and ensuing fire.

Investigators say the home is rented by a 50-year-old woman, who lives there with the boy who saw the fire and three other children. They are now staying with relatives.
