Rape survivor tells her story at balloon launch marking Sexual Assault Awareness Month

INDIANAPOLIS -

A rape victim took her fight for change to the steps of the Statehouse Tuesday.

Nine years ago, Jenny Wendt was raped by an IUPUI teaching assistant, but her attacker - who recently confessed to the crime - won't face charges because the five-year statute of limitations had run out.

"That made me angry that somebody could walk into a police station and tell them, 'Hey, I committed a crime.' Not only that but a violent crime against somebody, and then walk out the front door," Jenny Wendt said Tuesday.

Wendt shared her story during a balloon release downtown marking the start of Sexual Awareness Month. She spoke to the crowd about her push to eliminate Indiana's statute of limitations on rape cases.

Her online petition already has more than 2,500 signatures.
