Music helps trigger Alzheimer patients' memories

MUNCIE, Ind. -

Ball State University students are using music to help bring patients with Alzheimer's disease out of their fog of memories.

"Musical Memory" is a national program. The Star Press reports that the Ball State chapter works out of professor Mike Gerhard's telecommunications class.

Students hook patients up with iPods and headphones and treat them to the music they prefer, whether it be gospel, rhythm and blues or old-time rock 'n' roll.

Sometimes listening to the tunes helps lift the patients' mental fog and bring old memories back into sight.

One 82-year-old man who couldn't remember whether he had been married recalled his wife's name after listening to "Amazing Grace" and other gospel music.
