DETROIT -

A group trying to save the Michigan factory where Rosie the Riveter became an icon of American female empowerment during World War II needs to raise another $1.5 million by May 1 to save it from the wrecking ball.

The group announced Friday that it has raised $6.5 million of the $8 million needed to purchase the Willow Run Bomber Plant where Rose Will Monroe and other workers built a B-24 bomber an hour to aid the American war effort.

The group hopes to turn the site west of Detroit into a museum dedicated to aviation and the countless Rosies who toiled at similar plants throughout the U.S.

Michigan Aerospace Foundation president Dennis Norton says gives himself and other organizers "a 75 percent chance of pulling it off."
