CARMEL, Ind. -

A father and son hospitalized by a Thursday morning house fire have died.

The Marion County Coroner's office confirmed Saturday that both James Shiel and his 2-year-old son Andrew died from their injuries. A pet dog also died in the fire.

According to family members, vital organs were donated from James Shiel's body - his heart, pancreas, liver and both kidneys. Three individuals benefited from the organ donations.

Shiel's family issued a statement that read, in part, "James and his son Andy are deeply missed and we feel blessed to have had each of them in our life, even though it was for too short of time....We find peace in knowing that James will live on in others and he and Andy will have each other in eternal life."

Firefighters were called to the Shiel's home on Auman Drive East near the Mohawk Hills Golf Course Thursday morning around 6:30 a.m. At least two neighbors tried to rescue the father and his little boy from their burning home, but couldn't get inside to help them, according to fire crews.

Saturday night, two candles were left burning outside the home in honor of the father and son.

While the fire appears to have started in the front corner of the home, the cause remains under investigation. What investigators do know is that there were no working smoke detectors inside.
