Takeover schools get more options under bill

Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

Failing schools taken over by the state in 2011 could be returned to their original school districts or become charter schools if Gov. Mike Pence signs a bill passed by lawmakers this year.

The legislation updates the 1999 law that allowed the state to seize control of schools that had failed for six consecutive years. It also clarifies how schools can emerge from the takeover process.

Indianapolis Public Schools lobbyist Libby Cierzniak tells the Indianapolis Business Journal the legislation represents a "reasonable approach" for the four IPS schools taken over by the state.

State Board of Education member Dan Elsener says the bill gives the board more options to transition schools out of takeover.
