Guerin Catholic High School won the Class 3A boys basketball state championship two years ago. Greensburg High School won the state title last year. Guerin Catholic (22-3) is ranked number two. Greensburg (26-1) is ranked number one. The champs of the past two seasons meet Saturday in the Richmond semistate at 4:00 p.m. to decide which school wins a return trip to the state finals this year.
"It's a pretty good matchup," says Guerin senior forward Aaron Brennan, an IUPUI recruit. "They've got some good recruits. We've got some good recruits. Both are very good teams that are well coached. It should be a good game to watch and play in."
The matchup is expected to draw a capacity crowd at Richmond High School, where Tech plays Bloomington North in the second game around 6:00 p.m.
"This is a great matchup," said Guerin Catholic coach Pete Smith, who led the Golden Eagles to their first title in 2012. "I think everyone that has been in 3A would like to see this matchup. We're just excited to get here. A lot of teams could look ahead and not get there. That's a complement to our guys."
"We've been looking forward to it this week," said Guerin Catholic senior Cris Burrough. "There's been a lot of hype around Guerin just talking about it. It should be a pretty good game. I think we match up with them pretty well and we're excited."
"I think the environment is going to be crazy," said Brennan. "To be able to play in it is even crazier."
Guerin Catholic has won 11 straight games and features four seniors who played on the state title team in 2012.
"We don't really care who scores," says Brennan. "We don't care about the stat line. All we care about is the wins."
Guerin Catholic has practiced all week without senior point guard Whit Rapp, who was absent again Friday to undergo treatment for a hip pointer. Rapp tripped and fell on his hip while driving to the basket in a regional game last Saturday. Coach Pete Smith says the normal recovery is 2-4 weeks, but he is still hopeful Rapp might be able to play Saturday.
"Whit does such a good job getting the ball down the floor," said Smith. "We may have to be a little bit more deliberate on offense. Even though we have a lot of confidence in the guys that will fill that role, Whit's hard to fill. The good thing is we played that style in the regional when Whit went down."
Freshman Matthey Godfrey fills the point guard duties in Rapp's absence.
"It's been tough, but we always have the mindset of next man up," said Burrough. "We know that Godfrey will step in and do his job well, as he did in the regional. It is tough to see that and we're disappointed, but I think we'll still be alright."
