The Bulldogs ended the 2013-14 season with a loss 78-61 loss at South Dakota State on Thursday night. Junior Liz Stratman led BU in a losing effort with 15 points, 12 rebounds and six blocked shots.
The turning point of the game was a combination of the final three minutes of the first half, where the Jackrabbits turned a two point lead into an 11 point halftime edge, and the early stages of the second half when SDSU posted a 19-0 run to build a 59-33 cushion.
A balanced scoring attack helped South Dakota State earn the win as 11 different players scored on Thursday night. Four players reached a double figure scoring total with Steph Paluch and Mariah Clarin tying for the team lead with 14 points each. Clarin posted a double-double by adding 12 rebounds.
Taylor Schippers and Daress McClung joined Stratman as impact players on the Bulldog sideline. Schippers led all players with a game-high 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting. McClung did a majority of her damage in the first half as she ended the game with 10 points and four rebounds.
The free throw line was a major factor in the outcome of the game as SDSU hit 24-of-31 from the stripe. Butler hit 75 percent of their opportunities gong 15-for-20.
The rebounding margin also hurt BU as South Dakota State grabbed 10 more rebounds than Butler including six more on the offensive glass.
The Jackrabbits posted 16 second chance points while also winning the points in the paint and bench point categories. Freshman Chynna Stevens came up with 13 points, six rebounds, two blocks and steal off the bench for SDSU.
The 2013-14 season comes to a close with Butler reaching the WNIT for the fifth time in six years. They end the year with a 15-16 overall record.
