EVANSVILLE, Ind. -

Police say an eyewitness identified a man who was later arrested near a burning Evansville apartment building where three people were found dead.

Evansville Police Sgt. Jason Collum says officers caught 31-year-old Christopher Compton less than 10 minutes after firefighters arrived at the scene of the blaze Monday afternoon on W. Franklin St. near Main St.

Compton was jailed held without bond Tuesday on murder and arson charges. Collum says no other arrests are expected.

Firefighters found three bodies in an upstairs apartment in the two-story building. Information on their identities hasn't yet been released. Three other people were injured, including two whom authorities say were airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital.

An initial court date for Compton hasn't been set, and it wasn't clear whether he has an attorney.

The fire was mostly on the second floor of the building and spread quickly. A woman who lives in the apartment complex said two people had to jump out of windows to escape.

Four people were taken to area hospitals. All were expected to be okay, but two were still transferred to Wishard Hospital in Indianapolis. Four firefighters who were battling the fire also sustained minor injuries.

Police officers found a gun nearby but said it was not connected to the fire.
