Indiana to oversee how Gary schools spend US funds

GARY, Ind. -

The state's labeling of the Gary Community School Corp. as "high risk" has been accepted by the district's school board.

The (Munster) Times reports the Gary School Board voted 4-3 Monday to accept the designation by the Indiana Department of Education. The move allows the state to oversee how the district's federal funds are spent.

Gary Superintendent Cheryl Pruitt says her staff and the state agency will work collaboratively in guiding the district.

School board member Nellie Moore, who objected to the designation, says the board should have appealed it and showed the state what the district is doing to make improvements.

Gary Teachers Union President Joe Zimmerman said teachers need copy machines, support in discipline, acceptable physical environments and basic supplies to implement curricula.
