A man who served time in Indiana prisons for numerous charges including child molestation has been arrested in Colorado.
Jaacob Vanwinkle is accused of killing a 5-year-old boy, a 9-year-old girl and their 35-year-old mother Sunday night. The 31-year-old is believed to have been the mother's boyfriend, according to police.
Police were responding to a report of a sexual assault from a teenage girl when they found the bodies. Sgt. Shannon Byerly said the girl escaped and ran to a neighbor's home to notify police. She was later taken to a hospital where she was treated and released.
Investigators have not said how the teen knew the victims or Vanwinkle and none of the victims have been identified.
Vanwinkle served time in Indiana prisons for child molestation, vicarious sexual gratification and theft by receiving. He was investigated for his roommate's death in 2011 after the man's decomposing body was found in their Whiteland apartment covered by debris, but the pathologist ruled the cause of death as a heart attack and no charges were filed.
He faces charges of first degree murder, kidnapping and sexual assault for the Colorado crimes, according to Sgt. Byerly.
