Students hope to avoid ISTEP problems this year

Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

On Monday, ISTEP testing begins for thousands of Indiana students.  Testing is starting a week late and many are wondering whether there will be problems like the ones that were seen by teachers and students last year.

This year, ISTEP testing was delayed due to the winter storms earlier this year.  Any parent who had a student taking ISTEP last year remembers the troubles that came up for thousands of students who tried to log on but couldn't, or once they did log on to take the online tests, ran into problems.

It turned out to be a system overload and the  company who administers the tests says all the problems have been worked out.

CTB/McGraw Hill says it made improvements to the servers since last year. It says those servers will be able to handle twice the number of students taking ISTEP this year.  The company says they brought in a third party and their own experts to look at everything.

There are things you as parents can do to help your child prepare for the ISTEP tests. Here are some suggestions from IPS teachers and staff:

- 'Show what they know' (remind them they've been preparing all year).

- Try to avoid drama and meltdowns in the morning.

- Write an encouraging note and put in their lunch box or book bag (or text).

- Eat a healthy breakfast

- Get a good night's sleep

ISTEP testing runs through March 19th.
