Western senior guard Carley O'Neal scored a team-high 12 points and paced her team with her sure ball-handling skills, and a stout, fundamentally sound defense led the Panthers to a 38-35 Class 3A girls basketball title over Evansville Mater Dei Saturday in Terre Haute.
Facing a Mater Dei team that was averaging 64.2 points per game, Western kept Maura Muensterman - an Indiana University commit and Miss Indiana Basketball candidate - in check, limiting her to 12 points on 3-of-13 shooting.
As a team, Mater Dei shot 24 percent from the field.
With the victory, Western claimed its first girls state basketball title and prevented Mater Dei from winning a third straight state title. It is the school's third state title overall in all sports.
