Doctors have sidelined a Purdue University basketball player because of a genetic disease known as HCM.
Freshman forward Jay Simpson has a condition in which a part of the heart muscle is abnormally thickened. Coach Matt Painter said the Boilermakers were very fortunate their doctors were able to diagnose the condition.
Simpson is on course to graduate in May 2016 and will remain on scholarship at Purdue.
The same condition took the lives of other well-known players such as Hank Gathers, Reggie Lewis and Kevin Duckworth.
