Indiana lawmakers approve police education bill

Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

New standards for police cultural sensitivity training and reporting of bullying-related suicides could become law pending the governor's approval.

The Indiana Senate gave final approval to the bill in a 40-9 vote on Wednesday. Gov. Mike Pence now must decide whether to sign the bill into law.

If Pence supports the bill, police training would have to include information on the U nonimmigrant visa. The visa is given to victims of human trafficking, domestic violence and other crimes.

Other education would focus on issues related to race, religion, gender and mental disabilities.

The bill also would create protocols for emergency medical providers to report suicides when bullying likely was involved.
