Indiana Senate passes bill to restrict drone use

Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

Indiana police would need search warrants before using aerial drones or demanding passwords for electronic devices if the Legislature gives final approval to a digital privacy bill.

The restrictions, along with several others on police designed to protect privacy, passed the Senate unanimously on Tuesday.

The bill also sets limits on using real-time tracking devices and makes recording on private property without permission or a warrant a misdemeanor.

The legislative push for greater privacy protections comes amid criticism of the National Security Agency's surveillance programs.

The bill now heads to negotiations between the Senate and House to iron out differences. If approved, it will go to Gov. Mike Pence's desk for final approval.
