The longtime president of Anderson University has announced he is stepping down from the office.

James Edwards has served for nearly 25 years as president of the university in the community of 55,500 people about 30 miles northeast of Indianapolis.

The Herald Bulletin reports that Edwards is only the fourth person to hold the office in the Christian school's 97-year history.

Edwards announced Monday that he plans to step down by the end of the 2014-15 academic year. His plans after that aren't clear.

Former executive vice president for academic affairs Carl Caldwell says Edwards fostered a compatible environment for Christian faith and scholarship.

A statement says Edwards also oversaw fundraising campaigns that brought in more than $205 million and the construction of several campus buildings.
