Ice jam causes creek flooding near Lafayette

Updated:

Authorities say an ice jam has caused a creek near Lafayette to overflow its banks, flooding several homes and prompting some evacuations.

Tippecanoe County Sheriff Tracy Brown tells the Journal & Courier the ice jam is near where Wildcat Creek flows into the Wabash River a couple miles north of Lafayette.

Brown says the flooding started early Friday and that it is unpredictable how high the water will rise in the rural area.

WLFI-TV reports at least four homes were flooded at midmorning and 15 people have been evacuated.

State conservation officers used an airboat to help some people reach dry ground.
