Since we arrived in Sochi, we've been chasing down the big story lines with Olympic athletes. We were there when Team USA swept the new sport of slopestyle skiing, with Indiana's Nick Goepper winning bronze.
But it's not just athletes turning heads at the Winter Games. There are plenty of celebrities and politicians, too. And on Saturday, I had an encounter I didn't expect!
Working the Olympics is non-stop. The days are long and the breaks come few and far between. So I welcomed a much-needed break on Saturday. Blue skies, sunshine, palm trees, the glittering Black Sea – just me and my cell phone looking for a few photo opportunities.
I noticed several men wearing security ear pieces in the area. I stopped by a shop to pick up a sandwich for lunch and when I came out, I saw a little boy crash on his bike along the boardwalk by the beach. I had a beach towel and offered it up. The Russian Secret Service also came running to the boy's aid.
I quickly made a couple of instant friends and they gave me a front row seat to a photo opportunity of a lifetime.
President Vladimir Putin arrived to a clutch of Russian media personnel – along with Dave from Indiana! The camera shutters clicked like crazy.
Putin enjoyed coffee with Olympic dignitaries while we all snapped photos.
And that's why you need to hang out with me!
Despite the language barrier, a little Hoosier hospitality went a long way on my day off!
