Checkup 13: Heart Scan

Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

This month, our Checkup 13 report focuses on heart health.

Marcia Spencer of Fishers says she knew she had a family history of heart problems, so at her doctor's advice, she went to get a heart scan.  When she read over the results, they were not what she expected.  Marcia says, "The way I interpreted it.. being a teacher.. is 75 percent of people did better than I did and that was like, 'whoa'.. that's not acceptable in the least bit ".

To slow the accumulation of calcium in her arteries, Marcia made some lifestyle changes, including increasing her intake of fruits and vegetables and being more active. She now walks twice a day with her dog through her Fishers neighborhood.

Now, this heart scan is recommended for patients who are 40 years of age and older, who may be at risk for heart disease, but have not been diagnosed for it.

For Checkup 13 this month, you can register for a 49-dollar heart scan. To qualify, you must not have had a scan within the past five years. You must be at least 40-years-old and have at least one of these risk factors: family history of heart disease, history of stroke, other vascular disease, smoking, abnormal cholesterol levels, diabetes/obesity, or high blood pressure.

there are 11 locations around Indiana where you can register, but there are limited spots available.  The hotline opens at 8:00 a.m. Thursday morning and remains open until 7:00 p.m. Thursday night.

The number is 1-866-U-CHECK-13, or 1-866-824-3251.
