SOCHI, RUSSIA -
NBC's TODAY Show is bringing you daily coverage of the Winter Games and at least one host is cheering for a Hoosier athlete.
TODAY's set is on the plaza of the ice dome in the Olympic Park. With Savannah Guthrie's arrival, the gang's all here. The show is well-known for showcasing the stars of the Games, most of whom stop by the set after collecting their medals.
Co-host Meredith Vieira has her eye on a native Hoosier.
"I love Nick Goepper! I remember his mom saying at one point in this documentary, 'How do you encourage a child to have a dream that you're not even sure is possible?' They had never heard of this freestyle, slopestyle, you know, freestyle skiing, all that stuff. I mean, this kid was like, 'Where'd he come from?' and they encouraged him every step of the way," she said. "I'm a huge fan of Nick Goepper. He's an amazing, amazing athlete, but more than that, he seems like such a grounded young man from a fabulous family."
Also in Sochi from Indiana is Brian Alkire, a DePauw University student from Franklin, who is working as a runner for TODAY.
"It is crazy that we are both here. Two Hoosiers in Sochi, Russia, of all places," he said before running off with umbrellas to cover the show's hosts from impending rain.
